Cookie Policy
Last Updated: June 24, 2025
Your privacy is important to CoStar Realty Information, Inc. and our affiliates (collectively, “CoStar,” “we,” or “us”). This cookie policy (“Cookie Policy”) explains what cookies (a term that we use to refer to other types of tracking technologies as well) are and how they may be used on CoStar websites, products, and services (the “Online Services”). This Cookie Policy supplements our Global Privacy Notice (“Privacy Notice)” applicable to CoStar and our marketplaces
This Cookie Policy forms a part of our Privacy Notice. Please read the Privacy Notice for more information about our privacy practices. By accessing or using our Online Services, you are acknowledging that we can use information obtained from cookies and other tracking technologies in accordance with this Cookie Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please discontinue your access or use of the Services immediately. This Policy does not apply to services offered by other companies or other sites linked from our Services.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy at any time to reflect updated information about our cookie and tracking technology use. Once the Cookie Policy is posted, the changes take effect upon your continued use of the Services. We will update the Last Updated date at the top of this Cookie Policy whenever we make changes to the Cookie Policy.
What Are Cookies?
A cookie is a small data file placed on your computer or browser by CoStar (first-party cookies) or by our vendors (third-party cookies) when you use the Online Services. Cookies are widely used by website owners for website functionality, personalization, and efficiency as well as to provide reporting information. Third-party cookies commonly enable third-party features, such as advertising, interactive content, integration with social media sites, and analytics. Cookies may permit us and our vendors to track you overtime and across different websites and devices.
We often use the generic term “cookies” to refer to many different sorts of tracking technologies. Be aware that cookies are not the only way to store information on your computer or mobile device, or to obtain information about your activity on our Online Services or interactions with our ads elsewhere online.
CoStar stores additional information that is essential to the functionality of the Online Services in local storage. Local storage is similar to the storage of information in cookies, but never expires until we or you delete this information. Please refer to the instructions specific to your browser or device type for details about how to delete local storage.
CoStar and our third-party partners also use other tracking technologies, such as clear GIFs (also known as “tracking pixels” and “web beacons”). Clear GIFs are small graphics files that contain an identifier that recognizes when a user visits any of our Online Services that contain the GIF, including emails we may send you. This allows our third-party partners to monitor traffic patterns between websites, to communicate with cookies, to understand if you have come from an advertisement displayed on a third-party website or an email we sent you, to monitor the success of marketing campaigns, and to improve website performance.
Cookies may collect data that constitutes personal information (such as IP addresses or similar identifiers), and we treat this personal information in accordance with our Privacy Notice. Other cookie data may be combined with other data we process to identify you, becoming personal information that we will process in accordance with our Privacy Notice.
How long will cookies stay on my device?
Our retention periods for cookie information depend on whether the cookie is a “persistent” or “session” cookie. “Persistent cookies” can save information about you for longer periods of time and permit us to recognize you when you make repeated visits to our Online Services. “Session” cookies are deleted when you close your browser or shortly after.
Why does CoStar use cookies?
We use first-party and third-party cookies for several reasons. CoStar uses cookies to help us understand how the Services are being used, such as whether our users spend more time on a certain part of the Services, whether you experience any technical issues, to permit you to log in to your account, and for the security of our Online Services. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Services to function. Other types of cookies let us analyze and target the interests of our users and to enhance and personalize the user experience.
What types of cookies does CoStar use?
For convenience, we organize the cookies by their general uses below. These categories are intended to provide information about how different types of cookies are used by our Online Services. Please note that cookie use can vary, and some websites you visit may use and categorize cookies differently than we do.
- Essential. Some cookies are essential for our website to function, such as cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of the Online Services or navigate around our website effectively. Without them, our Online Services will not be available to you and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are only set in response to your actions when you request Services, such as cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of the Services or navigate around our website effectively. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.
- Performance. These cookies are used to enhance and improve the performance of our Online Services. These cookies collect information to help us understand how the Online Services are being used by our customers and how effective our marketing campaigns are. For example, we may collect aggregate information to understand what websites people are likely to visit before coming to our website, to see which pages on our Online Services are most popular, and to understand the types of devices used to access the Online Services. We also may use these cookies to serve new and different content and to evaluate new features. These cookies may collect IP addresses and may generate unique identifiers to analyze your activity on our Online Services.
- Functional. These cookies enable our Online Services to provide enhanced functionality and personalized features. Functional cookies are usually set in response to actions you take, such as setting your privacy preferences, language choice, account creation, or form completion. For example, if you enter your name, address or ZIP / postcode into a web form, it may be stored in a cookie, so you do not have to enter it again on other forms on the Online Services. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. Although these cookies are not strictly necessary, if you disable them, certain functionality may not be available to you.
- Targeting. Targeting cookies are used by our advertising and marketing partners and work primarily through uniquely identifying your device, and are used to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant ads on other websites you may visit. Our vendors can use this information to provide targeted advertising and retargeting, which may include placing our advertisements on other websites you visit, or matching a cookie or device ID to your email address so we can send you marketing communications that may be of interest to you.
You have choices about allowing cookies when using our Online Services. Please be aware that if you delete, block, or disable cookies, you may not be able to access secure areas of our Online Services and some parts of the Online Services, such as referral links, preferences, and integrations with other services, may not work or may not work as intended.
How can you control our use of cookies?
- Managing Cookies via Your Browser. You may be able to disable cookies using your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to enable, disable, or delete cookies as part of their settings and preferences. Please review your browser’s instructions, or visit All About Cookies (an unaffiliated website) for general information.
- Opting Out of Cookies Using Self-Regulatory Programs. Two key self-regulatory programs are available to help you control the use of cookies on your browsers — the Digital Advertising Alliance and the Network Advertising Initiative. Both programs help to regulate vendors in the digital advertising space. One function of their self-regulatory programs is to give you the ability to opt out of targeted (or interest-based) advertising, including cookies, from their member companies. If you live in the United States, Canada, or the European Economic Area and United Kingdom, you can visit the relevant Digital Advertising Alliance website to find a convenient place to opt out of targeted advertising for participating vendors in each region — Ad Choices (United States), Your Ad Choices (Canada), or Your Online Choices (European Economic Area and United Kingdom). The Network Advertising Initiative assists with opt outs through their Opt Out of Interest-Based Advertising webpage.
- Opting Out of Certain Third-Party Cookies. As described in this Cookie Policy, we use third-party analytics providers to collect information about the effectiveness of our Online Services and marketing campaigns. Some third-party analytics and marketing cookie service providers allow you to opt-out with them directly. For example, you may adjust advertisement and privacy preferences through your social media accounts. You may also opt out of certain Google Analytics activity by installing a Google browser extension, available here.
